Apple reissued an iOS 17.6.1 update for eligible iPhones to fix a major security flaw that was introduced in the first version. Every iPhone user on the previous version should immediately install the re-released version of iOS 17.6.1 with a different build number (21G101).
iOS 17.6.1 was first issued on August 7. Days later, Apple identified a significant security flaw and released an updated version of the same software patch on Monday.
According to the official changelog, “This update includes important bug fixes and addresses an issue that prevents enabling or disabling Advanced Data Protection.”
Apple wrote further, “Advanced Data Protection is designed to maintain end-to-end encryption for shared content as long as all participants have Advanced Data Protection enabled. This level of protection is supported in most iCloud sharing features, including iCloud Shared Photo Library, iCloud Drive shared folder and shared Notes.”
Some users who installed the iOS 17.6.1 update were prevented from enabling the advanced data protection, despite it being active on the iCloud. With the re-release of the update, the company has managed to fix the error.
According to a report by 9to5Mac, Apple is also said to be working on another update—iOS 17.6.2 with the build number 21G101 and/or 21G102. This is expected to be similar to the iOS 17.6.1 and will also be a security update. It is also likely to be the last iOS 17 update before the arrival of iOS 18 in September.
